The U.S. Department of Transportation has tentatively approved American Airlines to offer nonstop flights between San Antonio International Airport (SAT) and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA), marking a significant milestone after decades of local advocacy.
San Antonio International Airport is on the cusp of securing the nonstop service to Washington, D.C., that local political and business leaders have been after for decades. The U.S. Department of Transportation has tentatively cleared American Airlines to fly nonstop between San Antonio and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport .Nov. 8 is the soonest the department will issue its final order, Airport Director Jesus Saenz said.
But a bill reauthorizing the FAA, which Congress passed in May, gives San Antonio’s airport a shot.In early July, Fort Worth-based American submitted its application to operate a daily, nonstop flight between San Antonio International and Reagan National. The first flight’s number would be 1718 to recognize the year that San Antonio was founded. The flight from DCA to SAT would be 1947 to commemorate the year the U.S. Air Force was established.
