Samsung’s second generation 8K TV is a king-sized beast.

It seems only yesterday that Samsung was launching its debut 8K TVs. Actually, come to think of it, it really wasn’t that long ago that theThis hasn’t stopped Samsung from hurtling into its second generation of 8K sets, though. And given how quickly they’ve arrived, it’s surprising just how many improvements Samsung has managed to conjure up for its second 8K offering.

The Q900RBs also improve over the original Q900RAs by carrying a new black filter. This soaks up substantially more ambient light reflections than the Q900RA’s screen, boosting perceived black level performance and improving ambient light viewing. Design wise, the QN82Q900RB/QE82Q950R is identical to Samsung’s debut 8K models. Which means it’s essentially just a big rectangle with a strikingly thin, dark frame sat on a pair of surprisingly spindly-looking metal feet.

While the QN82Q900RB generally impresses with how many features it’s added in the few short months since the Q900RAs came out, there are a couple of things it still doesn’t have. Making the reduced blooming issues all the more impressive is the 82Q900RB’s black level performance. Really dark images look even deeper, richer and more consistent across the screen than they were on the original 8K models - even though that set was itself extremely impressive in that respect .

Having so much brightness at its disposal is especially helpful with HDR titles that have been mastered with 4000 nit peaks, avoiding the sense of reduced average brightness levels you get when watching such content on pretty much any other TV. It’s worth stressing here the effect on your viewing experience of being able to get the same sort of pixel density per inch on an 82-inch 8K TV that you would otherwise only get on a much smaller 4K TV. It’s hard to explain the impact this ‘PPI’ effect has on the picture’s sense of realism and sharpness; you really need to see it for yourself.

Given how stunning native 8K content looks on this bright, colorful and huge screen, it is, of course, a massive shame that at the time of writing there’s hardly any native 8K content out there with which you might unlock the 82Q900RB’s full capabilities. Even the handful of native 8K videos available on YouTube won’t play on the 82Q900RB, as the TV doesn’t support the particular codec these videos use.

Setting the blur and judder elements of the Custom motion setting to three or four each gives a more refined result. But it seems to me that a TV that’s got as big a brain as the 82Q900RB might be able to do a more impressive job with its ‘auto’ mode than it currently does.
