Following the closure of daycares at the Millcreek Activity Center, Kearns, Magna, and Northwest, Salt Lake County is considering expanding eight of its other programs to help fill the daycare gap over the summer.
"Definitely doesn't feel good for it to be up in the air," said Sierra, whose child is in a county-run daycare program currently. "It makes it really hard for parents to plan. It makes it hard to just even communicate with your kids about what's going to happen. My son is very sad, actually. He started crying when he learned that this place wasn't going to be anymore, so it would be nice to kind of have a decision and feel better about it." The county is now looking to fill the gap of childcare left behind, and not leave families in the lurch come summer. "And one of the things that we came up with is possibly having what's called tuition-supported summer care, which is basically just childcare during the summer provided by a bunch of our different rec centers supported by the fees that the families pay, so that it's like tax neutral," said Jiro Johnson, Salt Lake County Council Member.Salt Lake County parents have until May to find new childcare At six locations in Sandy, Millcreek, West and South Jordan, and Taylorsville, they want to offer kids aged five through 12 summer care for five days a week, eight hours a day, for six weeks at a time. After those six weeks, the county said parents would enroll at another location for the next five to six weeks — thereby covering the summer break. The county said they would be able to enroll 20 to 80 children per program, at $141 dollars per week. "We are going to be targeting those that are losing their daycare services first to try and make sure that there's no loss in service for at least a summer," Johnson said. Two programs in West Valley and Midvale would also be expanding the services they offer through the summer under this plan. "Is this a short-term solution or once these summer programs are implemented, will they stay in place?" 2News asked. While some parents told 2News they liked the prospect, others with children under five years old are still left disappointed. "It didn't really take into account anyone that didn't have a school-aged child," said Aymara Jimenez-Lofgren, whose 3-year-old currently attends a county-run daycare. "It is incredibly frustrating." "We know that this isn't the best solution. The best solution would just be to keep the daycares open," Johnson said. "But given where we are, we're just trying to move forward and trying to do something so that those kids have somewhere to go and the families aren't stressed even more than where they already are."A Utah mother was charged after she allegedly kidnapped her child's bully in order to force him to apologize.SHANNON MARIE TUFUGADOB: 8/7/1985COUNT 1: CHILD KITraffic in both directions of Beck Street just north of Salt Lake was blocked for several hours after a car crashed into a power pole.Officers on scene with thOne person was taken to the hospital after a crash involving five cars on State Road 36 near Stansbury Park in Tooele County.Lt.
