Flight delays and cancellations continue to plague travelers at Salt Lake City airport due to the ongoing government shutdown. Passengers aboard a Delta Air Lines flight reported an unexpected delay allegedly to accommodate a late-arriving passenger connected to a senior airline executive, leading to frustration and accusations of favoritism.
As the U.S. Senate edges closer to ending the government shutdown , travelers are still feeling the effects at airports nationwide, including in Salt Lake, where dozens of flights were delayed or canceled on Monday.
Passengers on a Delta Air Lines flight departing Salt Lake City said their plane was held on the tarmac for nearly an hour to wait for a late-arriving passenger they were told was related to a senior airline executive. The flight, Delta 4279 operated by SkyWest Airlines, was scheduled to travel from Salt Lake City to St. George on Thursday night. Several passengers told 2News they were informed by the captain that the delay was at the request of “his boss” to accommodate a late passenger. Some passengers said airline staff told them the individual was the daughter of a SkyWest executive. SkyWest said it could not confirm the identity of any passenger and disputed that the delay was for a single person. “The flight was held for more than one passenger,” a SkyWest spokesperson said in a phone call, adding that holding flights for delayed connections is not uncommon when operations allow.Analysis finds tickets at Salt Lake City airport among most expensive in country“That’s not speculation of why we were delayed,” said Jay Leishman, a frequent flyer who was on the flight. “We were told why we were delayed. The captain was very frustrated himself.” Leishman said he had been upgraded to first class but was later asked by a flight attendant to give up his seat for the late-arriving passenger. “I don't feel entitled to that seat," he said. "But you could tell that the crew was embarrassed. I can't tell you how many times they apologized.""To hold a commercial flight full of people for one person was quite startling," Leishman said. Flight tracking data shows the plane departed 53 minutes behind schedule and arrived 40 minutes behind schedule. Another passenger, Roger Seheult, said his daughter was among those waiting on board. While the delay unfolded, he posted about the situation on the social media platform X, where the post has since received more than 350,000 views. He said he does not know the circumstances of the delay and is leaving room for many possibilities. But, he said that many people experience the stress of making your connection and would appreciate that leniency. "I've been in that situation and I never really knew who to call to talk to about it. I've talked to flight attendants and they say there's not much we can do about it," he said. "How do we do this the next time we run into a problem because it certainly would be beneficial."While we regularly hold flights for late connecting customers if operations allow; the time spent onboard in Salt Lake City awaiting departure of flight 4279 to St. George on Thursday night was lengthier than it should have been. We apologize to our customers for their experience." The airline did not specify how many passengers boarded late, saying only that “several” people arrived in few minutes prior to departing from the gate.Passengers on a Delta Air Lines flight departing Salt Lake City said their plane was held on the tarmac for nearly an hour to wait for a late-arriving passengerHeavy delays are expected along Interstate 15 in South Salt Lake following a crash.Utah Department of Transportation officials said the crash occurred in the noA crash has forced the closure of Mountain View Corridor in West Valley City.Northbound Mountain View was shut down at 4100 South shortly before 1:30 p.m. SatuNine people were injured, and a child was killed, after Ogden police said a 14-year-old driver fled from officers in Weber County.Officials with the Ogden City"No Kings" rallies returned to Utah, including Salt Lake City, where protesters gathered at Washington Square Park before marching to the state Capitol.Salt Lak
