Sally could strengthen to a Category 2 hurricane before making landfall somewhere between southeastern Louisiana and the Mississippi-Alabama border, the Hurricane Center said.
Tropical Storm Sally triggered evacuations in Louisiana on Sunday as the northern Gulf Coast prepared for it to make landfall overnight Monday as a Category 2 hurricane with winds near 100 mph.
The National Hurricane Center warned Sally could bring rainfall along the Gulf Coast of 6 to 12 inches, with isolated amounts of up to 20 inches, over the next several days. Sunday afternoon, the storm was centered 140 miles south-southwest of Apalachicola, Florida, and about 240 miles east-southeast of the mouth of the Mississippi River. "This storm represents a very significant threat to the people of southeast Louisiana," Edwards said in a briefing Sunday afternoon.through Louisiana on Aug. 27, the strongest hurricane ever to make landfall in the state, and the region is still recovering.
