AI's energy demands are driving up greenhouse gas emissions in the tech sector. But Suzanne DiBianca at Salesforce says AI's climate benefits will be bigger.
As tech companies race to develop artificial intelligence, or AI, a dark side of the new technology has emerged. The large computing power behind AI requires enormous amounts of electricity, and the energy demand for AI data centers is driving up greenhouse gas emissions for major tech companies despite their ambitious climate targets.
To that point, I'm wondering is there a takeaway for places that hope to benefit from the economic boost that data centers can bring? Do they need to be looking at their grid as a component of their pitch for attracting data centers?I think 100 percent, and especially with the large hyperscalers, this is becoming ever more important. There is a lot of low-cost renewable energy now available that there wasn't three, five years ago.
