The fifth grader sat up straight, looking at the laptop screen. She held index cards on which she’d written questions for an 88-year-old woman she’d never met, someone who had an impact on generations of students. Not a hair was out of place. She wore her silver sequin dress. Sophia Varela, 10, is always prepared, and her teachers knew she’d be perfect for the prestigious Hispanic Heritage Month role of interviewing civil rights heroine Sylvia Mendez .

The youngster had researched how in 1945, an 8-year-old Mendez became a plaintiff in Mendez v. Westminster, a lawsuit that paved the way for Brown v. Board of Education, the landmark Supreme Court decision that outlawed racial segregation in public schools nationwide.
