Some chillers briefly failed, but the district hasn’t moved any students from their campuses.
With temperatures inching toward the century mark on the first day of fall classes, the San Antonio Independent School District said it “successfully” managed ongoing concerns about its campus air-conditioning systems. Officials last week told parents they were ready to move students off campus to other district spaces if ongoing adjustments to school climate control didn’t achieve the desired learning environment of 72-76 degrees Fahrenheit to meet state standards.
“The walls are so thin, the air gets through the window, you don’t have insulation, so it doesn’t matter that you have a top of the line that meets an industry standard when the building envelope is not conducive,” Superintendent Jaime Aquino said earlier in the week. The district, which also closed schools during a severe freeze in January, estimates it will need to spend at least $575 million on facility upgrades over the long term.
