KOTA KINABALU: Over 5,000 cartons of beer worth more than RM7mil including taxes, believed smuggled into Sabah from duty-free Labuan, were seized by police on Thursday (April 16).

Sabah Deputy Police Commissioner Datuk Mazli Mazlan said in the 8.15pm incident, police stopped two lorries at a roadblock in Menumbok for inspection.

“Upon inspection, we found the untaxed cartons of beer, ” he said during a press conference in Beaufort district on Friday . He said police found a total of 5,070 cartons of beer of various brands worth about RM1.35mil in the lorries. He said the two local drivers, in their 20s and 40s, were nabbed. He said initial investigations found that these drivers used the excuse of transporting essential goods to operate during the movement control order period.

Mazli said throughout the MCO, Sabah police recorded five smuggling cases, of which three were in Semporna district, and one each in Tawau and Labuan.“We will continue holding roadblocks and operations to prevent crime, ” he said.
