KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Forestry Department recently uncovered two cases of illegal logging and clearing government land in Keningau and Ranau, respectively.

The department’s Keningau division enforcement team apprehended a suspect involved in the activity in Kampung Kasuing, Keningau, on Friday , while their Kudat division uncovered the second case in Kampung Tagibang, Ranau, earlier on Feb 26.

“The suspect from the first case was detained under Section 23 of the Forestry Enactment 1968 , which carries a fine not exceeding RM500,000 and jail term not less than a year but not exceeding twenty years.“An investigating officer has been appointed for the case and an investigation paper will be presented to the state prosecution director for further action, ” Chief Conservator of Forests Datuk Mashor Mohd Jaini said in a statement Monday .

Meanwhile, in the Feb 26 incident, the enforcement team seized five tractors near Kg Tagibang, believed to be used to collect logs on state land without any valid permits or approval. “A total of 34 logs were also confiscated. During the raid, the team did not find any workers at the location while the five tractors were found at several separate locations.

“The case is being investigated under the same Section and an investigation paper will be forwarded to the state prosecution director, ” he added.“Anyone who wishes to develop state government lands for agriculture and other purposes, must go through the approvals of related agencies and departments, such as the Land and Survey Department and the Forestry Department, ” he added.
