A resident of Russia has been charged with working with conspirators in the U.S. in a hacking scheme and stealing nearly $1 million from American bank accounts, including those of New Jersey residents, U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger said. Vitaly Kovalev was charged with eight counts of bank fraud and one count of conspiracy to commit bank fraud in an indictment Thursday, prosecutors said.
Between September 2009 and November 2010, the defendant was residing in Russia and worked with at least six conspirators living in and around New York City to hack into online bank accounts, make unauthorized transfers and wire a percentage of the stolen money overseas, officials said.
