Russia-Ukraine live updates: Putin says troops won’t storm Mariupol steel plant but will block exits as Ukraine demands safe evacuation for everyone trapped

As the world watches the last defenders of the key port city of Mariupol hold out against an advancing and larger Russian force, and with women and children trapped inside a steel plant, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Wednesday that Ukraine is ready to exchange Russian military prisoners for Ukrainian civilians.

Zelensky offered two possible scenarios that would lead to the “unblocking” of Mariupol, which has been subjected to relentless bombardment for weeks, causing widespread devastation and thousands of civilian casualties.
