Timothy Loehmann was sworn in Tuesday night. The mayor said he was not shown the applications and didn't realize who he was swearing in.
Loehmann was sworn in at the borough council meeting Tuesday evening following a unanimous vote. Local media were told it was Timothy Lochmann who was hired, but borough president Steve Hazlett said Wednesday on social media that the last name of the new hire was Loehmann.that although he swore Loehmann in and oversees the police department, he was not allowed to see the applications for the officer position and had no clue who this person was when he swore him in, the news outlet reported.
Loehmann, a rookie, shot and killed Rice on Nov. 22, 2014, three months after Michael Brown was shot in Ferguson, Missouri. The incident set off nationwide protests. A 2015 grand jury declined to indict Loehmann or Frank Garmbackm his partner, on criminal charges — setting off a new round of protests.
Cleveland fired Loehmann in 2017 but not for killing Rice, who was Black, but for providing false information on his job application. An arbitrator and a county judge upheld his firing.
