COSTA MESA — If rugby isn’t king in and around the sleepy North Shore town of Laie, Hawaii, then it ranks a close second to football among all the field sports. It’s often that way throughout the tropical islands spread across the vast Pacific Ocean, but especially in Hawaii, Fiji and Tonga.
Wide receiver Michael Bandy was much older than Gilman and Fehoko when he was first introduced to rugby after a standout football career at the University of San Diego, recruited in an outreach program. He played rugby between stints in football’s spring league before signing with the Chargers in 2021.
In fact, Gilman and Fehoko each said rugby prepared them well for football. Gilman went on to play at Navy before transferring to Notre Dame. The Chargers picked him in the sixth round of the draft in 2020. Fehoko left the islands to play at LSU, signing with the Chargers as a free agent in ’20.
