The water main break caused major traffic tie-ups in Edison.
Jeff Goldman | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com“A 75-year-old ‘X’ shaped water main broke directly below Route 1, causing water to shoot upwards, the road to freeze and sinking Route 1 approximately 3 to 4 inches,” Mayor Sam Joshi said Wednesday morning in announcing the busy highway was back open.
The water main break occurred near the highway’s intersection with Travers Avenue, just south of the Route 514 exit, creating major traffic tie-ups and forcing motorists to detour around it. Homes in the area were largely unaffected though officials did warn of fluctuating water pressure in the area of Route 1 and Player Avenue. Joshi expressed his appreciation to workers and police who were on the job during frigid conditions to make repairs and get the road back open. “This 36-hour event had crews working in extreme weather conditions- with real feel temperatures below freezing, wind bursting water that turned into ice and mud.
