Two suspects, adult and juvenile, in custody for Round Rock Juneteenth festival shooting; adult on $1M bond, juvenile case details private.
At 17, Ricky Thompson III being held at the Williamson County Jail on a million dollar bond. His seventeenth birthday, just two weeks before the shooting on June 15, makes him an adult in the eyes of the law. The other suspect was detained on Friday evening and taken to the Williamson County Juvenile Justice Center. As a juvenile, he's considered a child in the eyes of the law and is expected to face an entirely different legal proceeding that Thompson is.
"The idea was that children are different, they need to be treated differently, and they shouldn't have that stigma of being a criminal," Ellen Marrus, a law professor at the University of Houston, said. "For some offenses, sometimes some of that information can come out once everything is settled, but the idea is to try to keep the child out of the media and out of that public eye.
Round Rock Police Chief Allen Banks said he knew there were "multiple shooters" involved in the mass shooting, and the department confirmed on Friday that it will continue to investigate multiple suspects, but given the crucial differences in ages of the two suspects in custody, it's possible many details of the investigation, including the potential for a murder charge to be brought forward against a juvenile, could be kept out of the public eye.
