PC Ali Malik is to be awarded for his bravery.

A rookie cop has been hailed a hero after he arrested a dangerous machete-wielding thug following a high-speed chase – on his first day in the job. PC Ali Malik and his colleague Constable Andrew McLaughlin were rammed three times by the vehicle they were pursuing in a scene described as something out of a movie or an episode of 1970s TV classic Starsky & Hutch.

Each time, the driver of the car – a 26-year-old man from nearby Blantyre – reversed the Renault into the police car before driving off. Eventually the two cops managed to corner the stolen car next to a park. At this point the three villains got out of the vehicle brandishing machetes at the officers before escaping on foot.

He added: "I was surprised and delighted to get the bravery nomination from my sergeant. I was quite nervous on my first night on the street and could not believe it would prove to be so memorable. Top UK & World stories today A colleague of the two cops said: “It was like a car chase out of a Hollywood film or Starsky & Hutch or The Sweeney. It was a remarkable start to his police career for PC Malik.” The police car involved in the car chase was so badly damaged it had to be written off.

Constable Glen Sives, from Dalkeith, near Edinburgh, who passed away last year, has been nominated posthumously for an award in the Community Commitment category after raising thousands of pounds for charity.
