Rockets insider: Kevin Porter Jr., less than 100 percent, back for 'very important' remaining games
Memphis Grizzlies guard Ja Morant loses the ball between Houston Rockets guard Jalen Green, center, and center Alperen Sengun during the second half of an NBA basketball game Wednesday, March 1, 2023, in Houston. Kevin Porter Jr. was not 100 percent after sitting out 20 games with a toe injury. Feeling that good is — like so much about the Rockets’ season — a dream for the future, not possible in this long, tough season.
“Just the passion and love I’ve got for the game. I’ve been away, been trying to do everything I can to get back on the court. Twenty games later, I’m at this point. This is the best I can get as far as my toe. The pain’s not too bad. I can play through it.” The loss, however, was like many this season, in the 11-game losing streak and especially in the past four games since the consecutive losses with three-tenths of a second left. The Grizzlies led by as much as 28 and the game ended with benches long since cleared with Memphis routinely getting wide-open looks in the second half. No Grizzles starter needed to play as much as 30 minutes.
The starting lineup they used Wednesday, with K.J. Martin in the spot Eric Gordon held when Porter last played, had started just one previous game. Porter, Green and Jae’Sean Tate had all been available in just seven games.
