You can argue all you want about whether hip-hop is rock ‘n’ roll or belongs in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. But it wasn’t long after that party in the Bronx in 1973 that hip-hop supplanted rock as the predominant sound of global youth culture.
featuring a variety of celebrity guests, including Rock & Roll Hall of Famers Darryl “DMC” McDaniels of Run-D.M.C. and Chuck D and Flava Flav of Public Enemy.Star-studded party highlights opening of Rock Hall’s ‘Hip Hop at 50: ‘Holla if Ya Hear Me’ exhibit
“Rock and roll is a big tent, and we celebrate all of it here,” said Rock Hall President and CEO Greg Harris at the exhibit’s grand opening. “We celebrate the roots, the shoots, the branches and hip-hop is just a major important piece of it.” Each artifact has a placard with pertinent information, much of which will be familiar to fans but may also surprise with tidbits such as Da Brat’s 1994 debut album “Funkafied,” earned the Atlanta rapper the first platinum plaque by a women rapper.
The third section brings in the hardcore rappers who scared the establishment and made hip-hop more controversial, with a focus on controversial artists such as 50 Cent, represented by his infamous camouflage bulletproof vest. There are also reproduced handwritten lyrics from 2017 inductees Tupac Shakur and Ice-T. Also, fun to read is the contract release letter from Sire Records spurred by Ice-T’s refusal to remove the song “Cop Killer” from his metal band Body Count’s debut album.
Finally, Cleveland’s hip-hop scene gets a little hometown love with artifacts from Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, lyrics to Machine Gun Kelly’s “Invincible” and promotional postcards from Kid Cudi, and for the true heads, a copy of M.C. Brains 1991 platinum-selling single “Oochie Coochie.”
