Rochester, N.Y. (WHAM) — Rochester police union leaders shared new details on a conversation with President Donald Trump's border czar on Friday.

A traffic stop Monday on Whitney Street involving Rochester police officers and federal agents has drawn national attention, with Tom Homan expressing support for the officers involved. The border czar took to social media, stating, "I stand with the officers of the Rochester, New York Police Department that answered the emergency assistance call from U.S. Border Patrol." "The membership is ecstatic that they're getting support from the Trump administration," said Paul Dondorfer, executive vice president of the Rochester Police Locust Club. "We explained the reason that we responded and what our actions were when we were there, and how fast our actions ended," said Dondorfer, who met Homan at a national police union conference with other Locust Club leaders in Nashville. City leaders, however, criticized the officers' actions during a media briefing, saying they overstepped and violated the city's sanctuary status and general orders."He very specifically said, you know, their targets are people who are committing crimes in our communities and are a threat to to the United States and to the safety of the residents of the United States," Dondorfer said. "He was very, very adamant about that." Immigration and Customs Enforcement confirmed it was conducting enhanced targeted operations in New York to enforce immigration law but has not provided details about the traffic stop's outcome."This is an ugly chapter in American history, driven by President Trump and Tom Homan — men who have shown open contempt for the Constitution and basic human dignity," she said. The City of Rochester has declined to comment, referring back to Wednesday's announcement that 10 officers would receive additional training on policies.
