Rivian is planning to introduce hands-free Level 2 driver assistance by 2025 and eyes-off, hands-off Level 3 semi-autonomous driving by 2026. The company believes this technology will provide significant value to customers. Rivian's system will rely on cameras and radar, and the CEO acknowledges that LiDAR may be necessary for full Level 4 autonomy.

Rivian has ambitious plans for the future of driver assistance technology, aiming to introduce hands-off Level 2 driving by 2025 and eyes-off, hands-off Level 3 semi-autonomous driving by 2026. Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe believes there's immense value for customers in having robust Level 2 and Level 3 capabilities, particularly in specific driving domains.

While Level 2 currently requires driver supervision and control, Level 3 allows the vehicle to take full control in certain conditions, freeing the driver from monitoring the road. Rivian's system will rely on cameras and its five existing radar systems, unlike Tesla's 'vision only' approach. Scaringe acknowledges that achieving full Level 4 autonomy would likely necessitate the use of LiDAR.Currently, Rivian vehicles feature the Rivian Autonomy Program, which includes 11 cameras, five radar sensors, 12 ultrasonic sensors, and a driver-facing camera for fatigue monitoring. These systems already enable lane centering and speed control. However, transitioning to hands-off driving requires a significant leap in capability. While Rivian will continue refining the first-generation system, new features will primarily be available on vehicles equipped with the updated Rivian Autonomy Program, starting with the second-generation R1s built from 2024 onwards. The good news is that these advanced driver assistance features are expected to be incorporated into Rivian's more affordable R2 and R3 models, slated for launch in 2026 and later, respectively. Rivian's pursuit of advanced autonomy could be a significant selling point for its mass-market vehicles
