The attorney for Mariano and Clara Rivera, founders of the Refuge of Hope Church in New Rochelle, vehemently denies allegations that they were aware of and concealed child abuse within the church. The lawsuit, filed in State Supreme Court in White Plains, details claims of sexual abuse by individuals connected to the church, with incidents alleged to have occurred at a church summer camp and the Riveras' home. While the Riveras are not named as defendants, they are accused of knowing about the camp abuse and silencing the victim. Their attorney counters that the couple has a long-standing reputation for charitable work, particularly with underprivileged children, and that they first learned of these allegations in 2022 through letters seeking financial settlements.
The attorney for Mariano and Clara Rivera is refuting the claims that the two knew of and covered up child abuse connected to the New Rochelle church founded by the couple. In response to a 22-page civil lawsuit filed in State Supreme Court in White Plains, attorney Joseph Ruta stated, 'Mariano and Clara Rivera do not tolerate child abuse of any kind and allegations that they knew about or failed to act on reports of child abuse are completely false.
'\The lawsuit alleges sexual abuse by two individuals connected with the Refuge of Hope Church in New Rochelle, which was founded by the Riveras. Clara Rivera currently serves as the senior pastor of the church. The claims detail that the abuse began in 2018 at a church-affiliated summer camp and continued with incidents at the Riveras' home in 2021 and 2022. Although the Riveras are not named as defendants, they are accused in the suit of knowing about the camp abuse and intimidating the victim into silence.\The Riveras' attorney further highlighted the couple's reputation for charitable work, particularly with underprivileged children in New York. 'Mariano and Clara Rivera do not tolerate child abuse of any kind and allegations that they knew about or failed to act on reports of child abuse are completely false,' Ruta stated. 'The very first time they heard about these allegations was nearly four years after the alleged incident, when in 2022 a New York attorney sent a letter requesting a financial settlement. This was followed by a second letter in 2023, from a different Florida law firm, again requesting a financial settlement.' The lawsuit, which seeks financial damages for the Riveras’ alleged failure to act on alleged incidents that were never reported to them, is full of inaccurate and misleading statements which we have no doubt will not hold up in a court of law. The Riveras are known throughout New York for their charitable work and especially for their commitment to serving underprivileged children. It’s unfortunate they are being targeted by false allegations
