A new study by RAND identifies key risk factors for dementia and cognitive impairment later in life, including physical health, cognitive abilities, and lifestyle choices.

Researchers from the nonprofit research organization RAND studied the risk factors for dementia and cognitive impairment later in life. They observed individuals around the age of 60 and analyzed various factors to predict their future dementia risk. The study confirmed that low cognitive test scores and poor general health in one's 60s are strong predictors of dementia.

Surprising findings included the significant protective effect of education, particularly having a high school diploma, and the increased risk associated with living in the South. Additional risk factors identified included diabetes, high BMI, less conscientious personality traits, and engaging in fewer hobbies or learning activities at around 60 years old. People who lacked private health insurance at age 60 also had an elevated chance of developing cognitive impairment or dementia
