With the cost of eggs skyrocketing, some residents in the Greater Cincinnati area are turning to backyard chickens as a budget-friendly alternative. The Colerain Township Zoning Department has seen a surge in inquiries about chicken ownership, prompting officials to remind potential chicken owners of the legal requirements. Residents must have at least one acre of land, can keep up to six chickens per acre, and are prohibited from having roosters.
COLERAIN TOWNSHIP, Ohio - As egg prices continued to soar, some residents in the Greater Cincinnati area were considering raising chickens as a cost-effective alternative.
"While I think it's an excellent idea to have chickens in many circumstances, we just have to be, we just have to think of our neighbors and be considerate of those around us and follow community standards," said David Peters, senior planner and zoning administrator. Steve Rock, founder of the nonprofit Sidestreams Foundation, was actively educating the community through the projectHe highlighted several key considerations for prospective chicken owners.
