The price of eggs has skyrocketed in recent months, leaving local restaurants scrambling to adjust. This article explores how two Dothan restaurants, Charlotte’s and ChefKym’s, are coping with the increased costs and finding ways to maintain affordability for their customers.
Egg prices have soared by 25 percent since November, according to the American Egg Board. The U.S. Department of Agriculture attributes this surge to the Avian Flu, which has sickened over 15 million hens. This dramatic increase is causing headaches for local restaurant owners like Charlotte Benton of Charlotte’s Restaurant in Dothan . Benton, who has owned the restaurant for almost a decade, has only raised prices twice during her tenure.
If the egg prices continue to climb, she will be forced to increase prices again, a prospect she dislikes. 'And I hate that,' Benton said. 'We just want to provide a good meal and not rip everybody’s pocket wide open.'Benton explains that the restaurant used to purchase 5 dozen eggs for $4.97 but now pays $40 for the same quantity. At ChefKym’s, owner Kimberly Thomas is facing the same challenge, despite utilizing outsource vendors. She revealed that the price of 15 cartons of liquid eggs has skyrocketed to $93. Thomas, however, is attempting to mitigate the impact on her customers. Although her lunch specials may see a slight increase of a dollar or two, she is offering an extra side dish and planning breakfast specials to compensate. 'To kind of make our customers still feel welcomed and appreciated here,' she said.Despite these difficulties, both Benton and Thomas are committed to providing their customers with the best possible service and food. Benton stated, 'They’re loyal to us so we’re going to do our best to be loyal to them and keep providing the same meals and the service that they’ve grown accustomed to and what they love.'
