A pediatrician in Dothan, Alabama, believes a recent increase in food allergy cases is due to recommendations for delaying the introduction of certain allergens to children until they are 1 or 2 years old. Pediatrician Angie Blaxton states that this approach, instead of decreasing allergies, has likely contributed to their rise.

Pediatrician Angie Blaxton believes the increase is from recommendations given to pediatrician clinics stating that “Children should not ingest certain allergens until they are one or two years of age.” “Instead of decreasing allergies, what we actually found was it had increased allergies,” Blaxton said. “So, we think that’s the most likely explanation for the huge rise in food allergies.“Depending on their age, she said they can determine which test works for them.

“We do not recommend having allergy testing for environmental allergies or food allergies testing until the child is two years old,” Blaxton said. “Skin prick tests are much more accurate at that age and our local allergist do see our patients for that testing when necessary.
