"My parents paid cash for everything, and I thought that was the only way to do it. A new car? Pay cash in full. A second home? Pay cash in full. Another university degree? Pay cash in full. I knew from a young age that not everyone could afford these things, but I then thought they sadly had to go without. I honestly was probably 18 or 19 before I understood that the average person is paying off many of these things, and that’s normal.

"Then, at 14, I was sent to Earth, Texas, to stay with an aunt in the summer of '78. My father said it would be a good learning experience. I had no clue what was about to happen. The clothes I wore to my new surroundings — my cousins and folks of that very small town looked at me the day I arrived as though I were a celebrity! There was only one burger joint, one grocery store, and lots of dirt roads.
