“Using rice water for hair is a centuries-old Japanese and Chinese practice,”, a board-certified dermatologist in Great Neck, New York, and assistant clinical professor of dermatology at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, tells SELF. Rice water has also long been used for beauty and hair treatment in Southeast Asian countries, including Korea and Thailand. There’s no denying that rice is nutrient-dense—it’s rich in minerals, vitamins, and, says Dr. Graf.

, curly, or textured hair—which tends to need more moisture—it may not be their first choice. However, the nice thing about rice water is that it’s very gentle and can help soften natural hair without the use of harsh ingredients or chemicals, a major win given that this hair type is innately more prone to damage, Dr. Graf notes.
Strain out the rice, then use the remaining water as a hair rinse. You can either stand in the shower and pour it all over your hair from roots to tips and massage it into your scalp, or pour it into a spray bottle and spritz it on until the hair is fully saturated. you shower: You’ll want to apply it to dry hair, which, again, is more porous than wet hair and will be better able to absorb all of the nutrients, Wellman says.
