Right across the street from the International Longshoreman’s Association Local 1410 now stands a statue of a man who led the organization for years. And a park that bears his name.

) - Mobile County and the city of Mobile celebrated the legacy of local civil rights icon Isom Clemon.

Several city leaders attended including Mobile County Commissioner Merceria Ludgood, Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson, and Councilman William Carroll.“I Haven’t stopped smiling about this. It is just magnificent to see it in reality and here we are. My father was committed to the community, he was committed to civil rights. He was committed to the Longshoreman’s Association. But most importantly, he was just committed to people,” Darlene Moore said.

The park features improved seating, new sidewalks, enhanced landscaping, new lighting, and a unique play area designed with input from children at nearby Florence Howard elementary school.“My uncle was about feeding people. Getting food on the table. There were a lot of parts of the civil rights movement. Toilets and the buses, but he was about getting food to the people that needed it,” his nephew Willy Baptiste said.Daddy was about love. I am so excited that this park is here.
