Governor McKee announces state-wide preparations for a significant winter storm bringing heavy snow and sleet. RIDOT mobilizes crews and resources, R.I. Energy stands ready for power outages, and warming centers are activated to provide shelter for those in need.

Governor McKee announced that Rhode Island is preparing for a significant winter storm expected to bring heavy snow and sleet to the state. He emphasized that the Rhode Island Department of Transportation ( RIDOT ) will have its crews ready well in advance of the storm, with 200 state trucks and over 250 vendor trucks prepared to tackle snow removal. Furthermore, the state has 50,000 tons of salt available, which has already been pre-treated on the roads. McKee also assured that R.I.

Energy has additional crews on standby in case of power outages related to the storm. \The National Weather Service predicts that the storm will intensify from midnight to 3 a.m. on Sunday morning. Snowfall is expected to mix with or change to sleet from Providence southward after 3 a.m., leading to lower accumulations towards the south coast. Across the northern half of Rhode Island and Bristol County, Massachusetts, total snowfall is projected to reach 5 to 9 inches, while the south coast anticipates 3 to 6 inches. Precipitation is anticipated to cease around 10 a.m. on Sunday morning, with partly sunny skies in the afternoon. Roads are expected to be clear in time for Super Bowl gatherings on Sunday evening. \McKee highlighted the state's efforts to ensure residents' warmth and safety during the storm. The Office of Energy Resources is actively communicating with R.I. Energy and fuel terminals to monitor the storm's potential impact on energy supplies. To provide shelter for those who might otherwise face the cold, the Department of Housing will offer additional overnight capacity at warming hubs across the state. Warming hubs will be available on a drop-in basis, requiring no referrals. These include: West Warwick Convention Center, 100 Factory Street (open from 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 8, until 10 a.m. on Tuesday, February 11); 356 Clinton Street in Woonsocket (open 24 hours for the winter months). In addition, existing overnight shelter locations such as Emmanuel House (239 Public St, Providence – open 24 hours) and OpenDoors (1139 Main Street, Pawtucket – open 24 hours) are expanding their capacity. \McKee also emphasized that the RI Emergency Management Agency is in constant communication with municipalities statewide. The Department of State Police has deployed additional troopers to monitor highways and assist motorists in need. Finally, the Rhode Island Department of Health offered safety tips, including checking on older individuals, shoveling snow safely, staying hydrated, dressing warmly, and preventing slips and falls
