Zhejiang University researchers have developed a new membrane-based technology called the Janus Channel of Membranes (JCM).

Researchers in China have unveiled a new, highly effective technique for separating oil and water mixtures.

Recycling uses various methods, including centrifugation, skimming, and chemical reactions. However, these traditional methods are often slow, energy-intensive, and ineffective. “Our JCM achieves exceptional oil and water recoveries of up to 97 and 75%, respectively, with near 99.9% purities,” the researchers wrote in the study paper. As per the study paper, this new JCM technology uses a pair of semipermeable membranes: one hydrophilic and one hydrophobic.

The confined space between the membranes amplifies the separation process, leading to high recovery rates of up to 97% for oil and 75% for water, with minimal impurities.
