Cleveland Neighborhood Progress (CNP) unveiled its ambitious plan to revitalize the historic Shaker Square , aiming to breathe new life into the area. This plan, developed in collaboration with Burten, Bell, Carr Development (BBC), focuses on three key pillars: increasing housing opportunities, attracting unique commercial tenants, and enhancing outdoor amenities.
The nonprofits, who acquired the property in 2022 after its previous owner faced foreclosure, envision a future where Shaker Square thrives as a vibrant community hub. The plan outlines the creation of 170 new housing units, including rowhomes and mid-rise apartment buildings, many catering to families. This expansion aims to diversify revenue streams, ensure financial stability, and support local businesses by attracting a larger customer base. Shaker Square's outdoor spaces will undergo significant improvements, focusing on accessibility for pedestrians, cyclists, and RTA riders. The plan proposes enhanced pedestrian crossings, event-friendly spaces, and a redesigned central green area with a permanent stage, shaded areas, and a playground. The vision is to create a welcoming and interconnected space where residents can gather, socialize, and enjoy. Furthermore, the plan emphasizes attracting a diverse range of retail tenants, including fast-casual dining options, affordable apparel and home goods stores, and businesses that cater to the unmet needs of Cleveland's southeast side. CNP and BBC also aim to revitalize the second-floor spaces, potentially hosting retail establishments, offices, banks, or medical practitioners.
