The play's title character is a mysterious incarnation of the Hindu god Vishnu

For two disaffected high school girls suffering through a religious studies class, escape can’t come soon enough.

In “The Chronicles of Kalki” at Moxie Theatre, that someone wiser shows up — at least the girls can see her — right there in the classroom: a mysterious savior in ripped jeans who soon will take them on a wild ride. The final show in Moxie’s 18th season marks a significant transition in the Rolando theater’s history.: Jennifer Eve Thorn has passed the role of executive artistic director to Desireé Clarke Miller.

It’s all there and more in Moxie’s imaginative , if loud, production of Kapil’s play, an episodic, coming-of-age adventure awash in flying F-bombs and falling-rain sound effects. Whether it’s goading the girls, whom she caustically dubs “Betty” and “Meat,” into shoplifting comic books or shouting back at a Bollywood movie, Kalki has them in her rebellious spell. Swaggering more like a rock god than a specter from beyond, Kalki is quickly dubbed a “badass” by the girls. Confrontational as she can be, they know she’s got their backs.
