We speak to Hypnotic co-writer & director Robert Rodriguez (Rodriguez) about his 20-plus-year journey to make the Ben Affleck-led thriller and its Hitchcockian influences:

Director Robert Rodriguez is back with a mind-bending new thriller in Hypnotic. The film stars Ben Affleck as a detective who learns of the existence of the eponymous mind controllers when a bank robbery reveals seeming ties to his missing daughter.

In anticipation of the film's release, Screen Rant spoke exclusively with co-writer and director Robert Rodriguez to discuss Hypnotic, his 20-plus-year journey to bring the film to life, being inspired by Alfred Hitchcock, and how COVID led to creative challenges for the filmmaker. So I thought, "I got to make this thing," because what I loved about it was the angle was different than the other ones. Part of what we do as filmmakers and storytellers is we create a hypnotic construct for the audience to believe when they walk into a theater and they pay money to do this.

I can totally see how you put that into the film, and I love that it gives an extra layer of uniqueness to it. You mentioned that you've had this idea for 20 years, how has it changed from when you first came up with it to what the final product is? I love the way it merges sort of the two ranges of filmmaking you've shown throughout the years, the big budget of Alita and the more grounded but stylized efforts of the Mariachi trilogy and stuff like that. How much were you thinking about how big you wanted to go versus how grounded you wanted it to feel?

For this, even as COVID shut us down, and we kept losing money, and having to shoot it faster and faster, even my crew was like, "Are you sure we can get away with just pipes and a sign? Is that going to work and then a golf cart?" and I was like, "Yeah, it'll make the Hypnotic look even more powerful, that he's so powerful that that's all he needs."
