The play shares a couple's journey through pandemic, parenthood, war and finding meaning as an artist in a time of crisis.

In Mariya Khomutova and Matthew MacKenzie’s household, at least three languages are spoken on any given day — Khomutova’s Ukrainian, MacKenzie’s English, and the lingua franca of theatre. It was theatre that first brought the couple together, when MacKenzie travelled from Canada to Ukraine to workshop one of his plays. Khomutova was one of the actors in that performance, and their romance blossomed between rehearsals and after shows.

Khomutova and MacKenzie are also experts at drawing the humour out of every possible moment, building their stories around the most incongruous of details and adding to each other’s lines with perfectly timed bits of banter. Thanks for signing up!The next issue of Afternoon Headlines will soon be in your inbox. While their romance was shaped almost from the start by major, painful global and geopolitical events, they always find the light — sometimes only a flicker, but it shines through.

When they perform moments from their wedding day — after the drama of MacKenzie’s mid-pandemic journey from Canada to Ukraine, when he had no idea whether travel restrictions would ultimately allow him to enter the country — the joy radiating from the couple as they dance feels as true on stage as it must have been on their actual wedding night.

For now, dreams and longing shared through Metis-Ukrainian myth will have to serve — and they do, in abundance. But someday, Khomutova and MacKenzie know they will return to Ukraine and perform this play in Odesa, and their son will see his parents’ love story brought to life in both his peoples’ homelands.Ukrainian immigrant Yuliya Cadrain gives back to refugees settling in rural Sask.
