We traveled to Mexico City to drive the 2024 BYD Yuan Plus, a Chinese-made EV that rivals the Tesla Model Y and similarly sized EVs.
If you've been following the news lately, chances are you've heard about BYD. The Chinese automaker has been making headlines after surpassing Tesla as the No. 1 vehicle producer of plug-in hybrids and EVs, selling over 700,000 vehicles worldwide in the second quarter of this year. Recently it revealed a $12,000 EV in China, and earlier this yearThe automaker has an aggressive strategy to expand beyond China, and it has the backing of American billionaire Warren Buffett.
The Yuan Plus offers three different driving modes—Eco, Sport, and Normal. Eco limits the power and torque sent to the wheels, making the EV feel underpowered. The plus side is that it saves a significant amount of energy, and it's a good option if you don't have easy access to a charger. Sport has the opposite effect—it makes the Yuan Plus feel a bit more potent, but it depletes the battery quicker. This is common in any EV.
The 12.8-inch infotainment display, which rotates to provide a landscape or portrait orientation, adds a modern feel to the cabin. The Apple-like graphics and huge display make it easy to follow the navigation without having to look way down, andcan be used via a wired connection. Another cool feature is its voice commands, which work à la Mercedes by saying"Hey, BYD" followed by your command.
