'There was a crash and we then heard one driver screaming until he died. It was not pleasant'
Police now have more staff to better-tackle speeding and anti-social car drivers in Pendle towns and countryside, residents were told at a council meeting.
Sgt Sutcliffe added: “We are keen to get to some of the smaller parishes which have perhaps been neglected because of a lack of staff. Regarding new staff, he said his area currently had nine police officers and a similar number of police community support officers . Two new officers joined recently. He added: “One year ago, there was less than half that number. Hopefully you will see more people out on the beat.
One woman in the public seating area said: “The route around Carr Road and the bypass is a race track. Drivers are going at 90 mph. On dry summer days, you van see car tyre skid marks on the roads. But it can happen at various times, 2am or 3pm.”Another said: “Some of the speeders are going flat-out, 140mph at 2am. ”
The Pendle ‘Mad Friday’ may be named after the unofficial Mad Friday celebrations held before the famous Le Mans car endurance race in France. Sgt Sutcliffe replied saying: “Racing cars are a problem. We have got more trained officers to deal with these and are training more for police pursuit driving. Special training is needed for that type of police driving. But we have resources which we can deploy to specific areas, such as Barrowford, if needed. ”
