S. Highway 6 intersection. At Center Street and U.S. Highway 6 in Spanish Fork, residents said they’re growing frustrated waiting for a “Prepare to Stop” warning sign that was supposed to be installed by the Utah Department of Transportation. “We still don’t see the lights, and we’re just wondering if it’s going to happen,” said Amanda Taylor, a concerned resident.“It’s so dangerous because cars just don’t stop and they speed up,” said Taylor. “It’s frustrating because yesterday, again, there was a huge accident involving people I know, and it broke my heart, knowing it could be prevented.” When asked about the project delay, UDOT spokesperson John Gleason said late materials have slowed the project. “We’ve actually begun construction of the concrete foundation. We’re still waiting on materials, but in very short order, we should have a functional advanced warning system,” Gleason said. While that project is in progress, some residents express a larger concern about the overall safety of U.S. Highway 6.Residents fear speeding, red-light running at busy Spanish Fork intersection UDOT said it’s continuing to invest in projects to make the highway safer. They said crashes along Highway 6 have decreased by 60% over the last two decades, and the department has plans to continue improvements to further reduce accidents. “No one wants to see crashes. No one wants to see fatalities, and so we’ve put a lot of resources, we’ve put a lot of effort into cutting down on these types of crashes,” Gleason said. He added that UDOT has widened sections of U.S. Highway 6 in the canyon, added passing lanes, and is working on a new interchange.
