Residents of a Denver Borough nursing home were evacuated Tuesday night after a power surge in the area sparked a fire at the building, according to dispatch.

Front of The Gardens at Stevens, located on 400 Lancaster Ave., on June 25, 2025, the morning after a fire evacuated residents. Residents of a Denver Borough nursing home were evacuated Tuesday night after a power surge in the area led to reports of a fire at the building, emergency dispatchers said.

Firefighters responded around 8:12 p.m. to the Gardens at Stevens, located in the 400 block of East Lancaster Avenue. Dispatchers said the American Red Cross also responded to scene and was prepared to address at least 100 elderly patients after air conditioning in the entire building was shut off. One person was transported to a hospital, dispatchers said, though it's unknown who and the extent of any injuries. A representative from The Gardens at Stevens told CBS 21 there was an electrical issue with a transformer in the basement, causing smoke. There didn't end up being any fire, he said. The facility moved some residents out as a precaution, and once power was restored to a church across the street, the residents went there to stay cool. Power was restored to the nursing home within three hours, and residents were able to move back inside, safe and accounted for.As of 4 a.m. Wednesday, PPL reported no outages for Lancaster County customers.
