GOP Conference Chair Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., tweeted out official updates as each new round of voting began and the last-place finisher was removed from the ballot.Rep. Pete Sessions of Texas lost on the first ballot, Jack Bergman of Michigan lost on the second and Austin Scott of Georgia was out on the third.
A GOP civil war has prevented Republicans from agreeing on a successor to Rep. Kevin McCarthy of California. The GOP’s two previous picks, Steve Scalise of Louisiana and Jim Jordan of Ohio, bowed out after they failed to secure the votes needed to win on the floor.Emmer wants to hold a full House vote this afternoon to elect him speaker of the House, Rep. Doug LaMalfa, R-Calif., told NBC News.
House Republicans began their second round of voting after Sessions was voted out in the first round.Palmer dropped out before voting began, leaving seven candidates on the ballot.While other Republicans express skepticism, moderate Rep. Don Bacon of Nebraska has been the rare voice predicting the GOP will unite and elect a speaker today.
