Harris on Friday presided over the Senate, during which she swore in members for the 119th Congress. She led the chamber in the pledge, but appeared to recite the wrong words at the beginning. “I pledge allegiance to the United --,” Harris began before cutting herself off. The recitation omitted the words “to the flag,' according to footage shared online.And the VP forgets the pledge, of course,” Rep. Dan Crenshaw, R-Texas, wrote. The congressman went on to write a fictitious speech, which he claimed Harris would deliver about the pledge. “I pledge allegiance—which, you know, is about pledging,” the mocking speech read in part. “And pledging is important because when we pledge, we are pledging to something, right? So, I pledge allegiance to the flag. Now, this flag, it’s not just a flag. It’s the flag. And it’s a flag that stands for well, it stands. It stands for something.” Oklahoma State Superintendent of Public Instruction Ryan Walters also mocked Harris, noting “under President Trump, we will restore pride in our country, honor our traditions, and ensure our leaders actually respect the values that make America great.” “Kamala Harris not knowing the Pledge of Allegiance says everything about the last four years,” he added.
