Republican Representative Andy Ogles from Tennessee has proposed a constitutional amendment that would permit presidents to serve up to three terms, sparking debate within his own party and raising questions about the future of presidential term limits.

Republican Representative Andy Ogles of Tennessee has ignited controversy within his own party by proposing a constitutional amendment that would allow presidents to serve up to three terms in office. Ogles' proposal stipulates that this extended term limit would only apply if a president has not served two consecutive terms.

The congressman explicitly stated that his proposal was inspired by former President Donald Trump, writing on X, formerly Twitter, 'I just introduced a resolution to amend the 22nd Amendment to allow President Trump to seek a third term.' Newsweek reached out to a spokesperson for Ogles for comment.Trump has repeatedly made jestful remarks about the possibility of running for a third presidential term. However, the Constitution currently bars presidents from serving more than two terms. Despite his playful hints, Trump has previously expressed that he would not support changing the 22nd Amendment for himself. In an interview with Time magazine, he stated, 'Not for me. I wouldn't be in favor of it at all.' Ogles' proposal to alter the Constitution for a potential third term has been met with backlash from numerous Trump supporters and Republicans. The 22nd Amendment of the U.S. Constitution explicitly states: 'No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once.'The process of amending the 22nd Amendment would follow the same rigorous steps as any other constitutional amendment, as outlined in Article V of the Constitution. There are two primary pathways for this amendment: 1) Congressional Proposal and State Ratification or 2) Constitutional Convention. The first path requires a two-thirds majority vote in both the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate, followed by ratification by three-fourths of the states. The second path, requiring a Constitutional Convention, necessitates two-thirds of state legislatures (34 states) to call for such a convention. Any amendment proposed through this method must then be ratified by three-fourths of the states. Historically, the most common route for amendments has been congressional proposal followed by state ratification. The 22nd Amendment, ratified in 1951, was primarily a response to Franklin D. Roosevelt's unprecedented four terms as president. It limits individuals to two terms in the presidency and restricts those who have served more than two years of another president's term from being elected more than once. Rep. Steve Cohen, a Democrat from Tennessee and member of the House Judiciary Committee, commented to Axios, 'Two terms is enough chaos for any nation to endure.' Jenna Ellis, who represented Trump in efforts to overturn the 2020 election results, wrote on X, 'Constitutional amendments are for enduring principles and process, Not for a singular moment or because you want attention from the current leader.' Ellis, alongside Trump and over a dozen co-defendants, was indicted in a racketeering case in Georgia. She eventually pleaded guilty to one count of aiding and abetting false statements related to the Trump team's attempts to overturn the 2020 election results in Georgia. Conservative pundit John Cardillo criticized Ogles, stating that he 'needs to pull that dumb 'give Trump a third term' amendment stunt and focus on reversing the pain Biden caused Americans.' He added, 'It's an embarrassing way for Ogles to climb the MAGA ladder. Term limits, not term extensions, because this nation won't survive 12yrs because of a Dem.'The process of amending the Constitution is intentionally complex, reflecting the framers' intent to ensure stability and thorough deliberation in altering fundamental laws. Historical attempts to repeal or modify the 22nd Amendment have often stalled due to political disagreements and the high threshold for state ratification
