There were 21,518 heat-related deaths from 1999 to 2023, a 117% increase, the report says.
says 2,325 people died from heat last year.
Heat-related deaths mostly varied until 2016, when they then began a steady increase of nearly 17% per year,. But the study concludes that the number of heat-related deaths likely is underestimated. “The way that death certificates are filled out, the people that are filling them out don’t always know the full circumstances that led to the death. So we’re only probably scratching the surface of it,” study co-author Dr. Jeffrey Howard, an associate professor of public health at the University of Texas at San Antonio, tells CNN. “The fact that you see this trend tells me that there’s probably many more deaths that are we just are unable to measure.
The study’s authors say that the upward trend of heat-related deaths likely will not diminish and that community leaders must be prepared. Howardmost of the deaths in the U.S. were in traditionally hot areas such as Arizona, California Nevada and Texas. “As temperatures continue to rise because of climate change, the recent increasing trend is likely to continue,” the study says. “Local authorities in high-risk areas should consider investing in the expansion of access to hydration centers and public cooling centers or other buildings with air conditioning.”CBS News reportsIf you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.
