U.S. Representative Wesley Hunt is pursuing legal action after his personal information was shared on social media by a senior advisor of Senator John Cornyn's campaign. The post, which included personal details, was intended to accuse Hunt of voter fraud. Hunt has reported the incident as a doxxing, leading to an investigation by the High Tech Crimes Unit. The campaign claims that the doxxing has put his family at risk.

U.S. Representative Wesley Hunt is pursuing legal action concerning the alleged endangerment of his family connected to Senator John Cornyn 's campaign. The situation arose when Matt Mackowiak, a senior advisor for the Cornyn campaign, shared posts on social media that contained Hunt's personal information. These posts were intended to accuse the Houston lawmaker of voter fraud dating back to 2016.

According to sources within the Hunt campaign, when approached by law enforcement and asked if he wished to press charges, Hunt responded affirmatively. The office of Harris County Constable Mark Herman has confirmed that Hunt filed a doxxing report, which is currently under investigation by the High Tech Crimes Unit. Law enforcement authorities plan to subpoena X to retrieve the deleted social media post that featured Hunt's personal information. The Hunt campaign released a statement emphasizing the risks associated with the incident, stating that in the present environment of political violence, doxxing a sitting Member of Congress or their family’s home address isn't just aggressive political tactics, but rather, it is reckless, dangerous, illegal, and puts lives at risk. The statement further suggests that the Cornyn campaign's silence on the matter indicates their approval of the actions. The campaign believes this is beneath the standard of a United States Senator and is disqualifying behavior. FOX Local has attempted to reach out to Mackowiak for comment. \The original social media post from Mackowiak included a scan of an affidavit concerning Hunt's lack of a voter ID, along with a copy of his Army discharge paperwork and a screenshot of his official congressional biography. The intent behind sharing these documents was to construct a timeline related to Hunt's voter eligibility. The affidavit contained fields for personal information such as Hunt’s address, driver's license number, and social security number. While the reposted version of the affidavit had these fields redacted, the initial post lacked such redactions. Mackowiak, in a statement issued on Friday, downplayed the significance of the issue, claiming that the information was obtained legally from Harris County officials and was therefore covered under public information laws. He says the purpose of his post was to establish a timeline that would show Hunt had cast a vote for President Donald Trump in the November 2016 general election. The affidavit that Mackowiak shared indicated that Hunt was not listed as a registered voter on November 4, 2016. Furthermore, a note below the designation explained that Hunt had been discharged from the military in October 2016. However, both Hunt's discharge paperwork and official biography state his discharge date as 2012. Mackowiak highlighted this discrepancy, suggesting it as evidence that Hunt had made false statements to an election judge in an effort to vote illegally. \The ongoing investigation and potential legal action highlight the increasing tensions surrounding political discourse and personal information in the digital age. The use of social media to disseminate personal details, especially when intended to influence or undermine a political opponent, raises significant ethical and legal questions. The case also underscores the importance of data privacy and the potential consequences of doxxing, particularly in a climate where political disagreements can escalate into threats and violence. The actions of both the Cornyn campaign and Hunt's reaction to them offer a clear illustration of how political campaigns can become intertwined with legal matters and the complexities of protecting personal information in the digital sphere. This case is not just about a voter fraud accusation but about potential doxxing, the role of social media in disseminating personal information, and the increasing politicization of personal data. The outcome of the investigation will likely set a precedent for future cases involving similar tactics, and how courts and law enforcement will balance the rights to free speech with the need to protect individuals from threats and potential harm
