Representative Morgan Luttrell introduces legislation to combat human trafficking of unaccompanied migrant children, aiming to prevent further exploitation and ensure their safety.
Representative Morgan Luttrell from Texas has introduced legislation alongside fellow Republican senators to protect unaccompanied migrant children from human trafficking. Luttrell expressed concern that over 300,000 unaccompanied migrant children have effectively disappeared under the Biden administration, leaving them vulnerable to exploitation, abuse, and trafficking.
He criticized the administration's practice of releasing these children without proper follow-up, claiming they fall into the hands of cartels and criminals. The Stop Human Trafficking of Unaccompanied Migrant Children Act of 2024, introduced in the House of Representatives, complements a similar bill in the Senate proposed by Senators Rick Scott of Florida and Ron Johnson of Wisconsin. This legislation aims to prevent future trafficking by implementing rigorous vetting procedures for adults who sponsor a child in the United States. These checks will encompass parents, immediate relatives, and unrelated adults. The bill also mandates that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) thoroughly vet all adults residing in the home of a migrant child. Senator Scott emphasized the alarming reality of over 300,000 young, vulnerable children potentially being placed in unsafe environments and at risk of trafficking. He blamed former President Joe Biden for dismantling the immigration system and opening the southern border, leading to dire consequences for human lives. The bill proposes multiple safeguards against child trafficking. It prohibits the release of children to sponsors who are in the U.S. illegally unless they are the child's legal guardian or a relative. Furthermore, authorities will be required to conduct a home visit before releasing a child to a sponsor and must make at least five unannounced home visits during the child's first year in the country. Representative Luttrell stressed the need for HHS to implement thorough vetting processes to ensure children are placed with responsible adults rather than predators. He also cited President Biden's border policies as a failure and asserted that the legislation will support the Trump administration's efforts to rectify the situation
