Rep. Andy Ogles introduces a bill to authorize Trump to negotiate Greenland's purchase from Denmark.
President-elect Donald Trump 's House GOP allies are preparing the ground for him to fulfill his promise of acquiring Greenland . Representative Andy Ogles, a Republican from Tennessee, is leading a bill to authorize Trump to negotiate with Denmark regarding the purchase of Greenland , a territory in North America with long-standing cultural and geopolitical ties to Europe. The bill, dubbed the 'Make Greenland Great Again Act,' was obtained by Fox News Digital.
Ogles stated to Fox News Digital, 'Joe Biden damaged our reputation over the past four years, and even before taking office, President Trump is conveying to the world that 'America First' is back. American economic and security interests will no longer be secondary, and House Republicans are prepared to assist President Trump in delivering for the American people.'The legislation would enable the sitting president to engage in talks with Denmark shortly after noon on January 20th, coinciding with Trump's inauguration. 'Not later than 5 calendar days after reaching an agreement with the Kingdom of Denmark relating to the acquisition of Greenland by the United States, the President shall transmit to the appropriate congressional committees the agreement, including all related materials and annexes,' the bill stipulates. The Constitution grants Congress the authority over government spending, meaning the executive branch cannot make any purchases for the federal government without first securing funding appropriated by the House of Representatives and approved by the Senate. Ogles' bill is supported by ten other House Republicans, including Representatives Mike Lawler of New York, Diana Harshbarger of Tennessee, Michael Rulli of Ohio, Dan Crenshaw of Texas, Anna Paulina Luna of Florida, Claudia Tenney of New York, Neal Dunn of Florida, Barry Moore of Alabama, Randy Weber of Texas, and incoming House Science Committee Chairman Brian Babin of Texas. While Trump first proposed the idea during his initial term, recent weeks have witnessed an escalation in his public statements regarding the acquisition of Greenland, as well as other entities like the Panama Canal. Trump suggested last week that he would not rule out using economic or military force to acquire them. When a reporter asked if he would rule out such coercion, Trump replied, 'No, I can't assure you on either of those two.'Meanwhile, the notion of purchasing Greenland has gained support among Trump's Republican allies, with proponents citing its strategic location near Russia, a major adversary of the U.S. Ogles argued that it was 'essential to our national security.' Trump's son, Donald Trump Jr., recently visited Greenland for what was described as a personal tourism trip. Ogles' initiative represents the latest effort by a House Republican to assist Trump in pursuing his foreign policy objectives. Last week, Representative Dusty Johnson, a Republican from South Dakota and chairman of the pragmatic House GOP Main Street Caucus, introduced a bill to allow Trump to purchase the Panama Canal. An earlier draft of the bill proposed buying the canal for $1, but no dollar amount is included in the final draft. This bill secured support from over a dozen Republican co-sponsors.
