Residents in remote areas of Denali Borough, Alaska, are struggling with the aftermath of heavy snowfall, facing concerns about medical emergencies, heating, and access to supplies due to road closures and bureaucratic delays. Plans are being discussed to secure equipment and utilize volunteers to clear the roads.
DENALI, Alaska - The snow stopped falling days ago, but for families scattered along remote roads in the Denali Borough , winter has not loosened its grip.In homes miles from the nearest plowed road, residents say their greatest fear is not the cold itself, but what could happen before help arrives.
“I would say the first and foremost are medical emergencies,” resident Joseph Chatfield said. “And then after that, people’s heat, their ability to heat their homes.” A series of storms over the past several weeks dropped heavy snow across parts of Interior Alaska, compounding an already severe winter. In remote pockets of the borough, where roads are often maintained privately or cooperatively by residents, the snowfall has effectively cut off some households from reliable travel.“Right now, we’re dealing with bureaucracy,” he said. “The bureaucracy doesn’t always move at the same speed that we’d like to move.” He said recent cold temperatures have closed what he believes was a narrow window to begin clearing efforts. “We missed the window of opportunity a few days ago,” he said. “But now that we’re in this stretch of cold weather, it’s looking like we’re probably going to be about another four days at least before we can start running equipment without breaking it.” Even when machinery becomes available, he said success may depend on fuel and coordination between residents and local officials. One idea being discussed involves securing rental equipment and using volunteers to operate it if funding and availability allow. “One of the plans that the mayor has floated is if we can possibly obtain a rental piece of equipment … the borough may be able to use some funds to pay for that equipment and then use volunteer operators,” Chatfield said. For Heather McGrorty, who also lives in the affected area, the impact is measured not just in snow depth but in daily decisions: when to run the generator, how much firewood to burn, how far to travel on foot. “Vehicle wise, none of us have,” she said, adding that the cold has made starting vehicles nearly impossible. “If they needed to go to the doctor, nobody can get out.”“When you go down, you’re going up to your chest deep,” McGrorty said. Many residents in the area prepare for isolation as part of rural life, she said. But the combination of prolonged cold and repeated storms has stretched supplies and planning. “Most of us prepare for something like this,” she said. “But when unexpected things happen … it’s where it gets hard.”“If something bigger happens like a heart attack or a stroke … the only way out is a helicopter,” McGrorty said.Denali Borough Mayor Chris Noel said the storms have affected much of the borough’s roughly 1,600 year-round residents, though officials do not have a precise count of those currently stranded. He said responsibility for maintaining roads varies widely across the borough, with state transportation crews handling highways and some local roads, while others rely on residents, nonprofits or shared equipment. The borough, he said, is working with state transportation officials, emergency management, and local partners to identify needs and match them with resources. “We’ve been working to understand the situation, assess what the need is, try to connect those who are in need with resources,” Noel said.“We can support road clearing efforts that could begin as soon as maybe tomorrow for those folks,” Noel said, adding that progress is happening “one day at a time.” Asked whether the storms expose gaps in winter preparedness, Noel said future planning may need to focus on resilience as weather patterns shift and winters become more extreme. “We’ve had a lot of experience over the last few years with wildfires and have encouraged, fire-wise, and thinking about concepts, what can we do around our home, around our business to strengthen it, harden it from in terms of wildfires,” he said. “And I think the same with ... big winter storms, we’ve got to continue to work on getting better about sharing the message when we hear of a big storm.” For residents accustomed to planning for extreme weather, the storm has underscored how quickly preparation can be overtaken by conditions. “No matter how well prepared you think you are, think again,” Chatfield said. “Mother Nature can throw an awful lot at you.”Teen, 2-year-old son die after crashing into tree, investigators sayAlaskan hockey player wins Olympic goldGeorgia family sees Alaska aurora, goes dogsledding through Make-A-Wish ‘I thought we weren’t going to have a team’: Kipnuk girls basketball’s journey from evacuees to title contenders ‘Iran has been at war with us for almost 50 years,’ Sen.
