Approximately 40 families in the Denali Borough, Alaska, are stranded due to a winter storm that dumped nearly 10 feet of snow, causing difficulties in accessing main roads and creating fuel shortages for generators. Residents are facing challenges with dwindling resources, lack of medication, and a lack of clear plans from the borough's mayor to clear the roads.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Around 40 families are stranded in the Denali Borough after winter storm s dropped nearly 10 feet of snow in the area. “We had a massive snowstorm within the entire week where it snowed about two feet for two days,” said Denali Borough resident Heather McGrorty.

“Within a week’s time, we had 6–8 feet of snow with 40-mile-an-hour winds.” According to McGrorty, most families in the area live several miles away from the nearest main road, making travel difficult. “I had just gotten my truck stuck, which normally can move a lot of snow,” said Joseph Chatfield, another Denali Borough resident. “It’s just been getting progressively colder. Equipment really doesn’t operate well when it gets past minus 20.” Chatfield told Alaska’s News Source he and his wife have been snowed in for nine days, leaving them at risk of running out of fuel for their generators. “There’s about four gallons left there, that’s not going to get us far,” he said. “I’ve run out of some of my own medication, and I’m going to have to get out at some point. We can’t wait another month.”“Nine weeks of extreme cold stripped everybody out of wood, so it’s gotten really hard,” McGrorty said. “Fuel-wise for running generators or any of that, I have about a week’s worth, and that’s pushing it. That same generator runs our well, so it can get very discouraging.” Both McGrorty and Chatfield said they have not heard of any plans from the borough’s mayor to clear the roads in the area. “A lot of us out here have been self-sufficient,” McGrorty said. “We’ve never really had to ask for help from the borough, and the one time we do really ask for help for the wintertime, we just get no real answer.” “We’re prepared for living off grid,” Chatfield said. “This is a lifestyle that we’ve chosen, and we’re well prepared for, but this is not something that is a normal circumstance.” According to Denali Borough mayor Chris Noel, however, the borough does not have the jurisdiction to clear the roads. “Unlike the boroughs to the north and south, the Denali Borough has a very limited role in coordinating road maintenance, including snow plowing,” he said. “We are communicating and coordinating closely with our department of transportation partners to determine what role we can best serve to help our impacted communities.”Kodiak fentanyl trafficker sentenced to 20 years in death case ‘It was incredibly swift’: Why an Alaska family was removed to Mexico this week, one son sent to Tacoma ICE facility Friday ‘Iran has been at war with us for almost 50 years,’ Sen.
