Al Biernat made people feel important, regulars at his restaurant told The Dallas Morning News.
Al Biernat has owned steakhouses in Dallas since 1998, though he's worked in restaurants since the late 1970s. Biernat died Nov. 13, 2024 after a short battle with ALS.
Even though Al Biernat's is a steakhouse, the owner added a vegan menu a few years ago to accommodate those who don't eat meat or dairy.Al Biernat’s North on Spring Valley Road was serving rainbow panzanella salad, lasagna and halibut at the Thursday lunch rush. The place was packed. So, too, was the Oak Lawn restaurant — the original restaurant, open since 1998.
“Most of the women on the wall were either wives or female entertainers,” Travis said. “There weren’t that many solo businesswomen on the wall.”She was a vice president at Dallas advertising agency Tracy-Locke, and Biernat seemed to respect the business lunches she booked, often as the only woman at the table.
“He had this rare thing of charisma and humility. He didn’t care if you were a celebrity or a normal person,” Richard Harmer said.Al was “the kindest man I ever had the pleasure to work for,” said Stephanie Potter, a Rowlett resident who worked as a server at Al Biernat’s North from 2019 to 2023.“It was such a treat when Al would come and sit in our pre-shift meetings and tell us stories,” she wrote on Facebook.
