Until the end, Al Biernat was a grateful person. ‘I’ve had a dream life,’ he told The News before he died.

Al Biernat, former manager of The Palm restaurant, went on to open Al Biernat's in 1998 and a second steakhouse by the same name in 2017. Biernat started experiencing neurological issues in May 2023 and was later diagnosed in bulbar-onset ALS.

In the last months of his life, Biernat agreed to answer a series of emailed questions about his legacy in Dallas restaurants. With his iconic seat in one of Dallas’ most influential dining rooms, we wanted to soak up Biernat’s wisdom.“I even believe that my illness will help others in some ways I might not even know,” he wrote in one.

Eventually, they made it through. Then and now, Biernat’s nephew, Brad Fuller, continues to operate the restaurant. He’s been there since Day 1.The single most important day at Al Biernat’s on Oak Lawn Avenue in Dallas was the Saturday before the 2011 Super Bowl in Arlington, Fuller said.He ticks off some other big accomplishments, like when Dr. Phil said Al Biernat’s was one of the best restaurants in America.
